Makin' Whoopi

Recently Chris kindly offered to come over and make us dinner.
A Breitenberg specialty: Sausage Pasta!
(In this same week, Ty also came over and made us salmon for dinner, unsolicited!
I mean, I don't know what is going on, but Amber and I are not questioning, just accepting.)

The following documents a brief conversation about Whoopi Goldberg on Sausage Pasta Night after I mentioned my love for the Sister Act 2 soundtrack and my displeasure at the incorrect (boring) download of a certain version of His Eye Is On the Sparrow I recently purchased from iTunes by accident. Obviously.

Sam begins to express his shock and dismay at the fact that Whoopi Goldberg is a voice for children's cartoons, declaring she is not a good role model.
Sam: "I mean, have you ever seen her stand-up acts?"

Chris, caught off guard and visibly shaken, counters with:
"I cannot even believe you're hatin' on Whoopi right now"

Ricky, ever the advocate, pipes up with, "But have ya seen Jumpin' Jack Flash?" in an attempt to throw his support behind the slandered Hollywood star.

My response? Often seeing all sides, "Well yeah, she is rather crude, I see your point. But come on - Sister Act 1 and 2 have such good soundtracks! Motown Jesus --
I mean COME ON! So great!"

Meanwhile Amber's commentary revolved around Fern Gully and how that is, by far, her favorite childhood cartoon. No Whoopi Goldberg there, to my knowledge, but it was a good early-nineties beginning to indoctrinating little ones against deforestation, as my right-wing parents pointed out to me, a socially aware 4th grader forced to listen to talk radio every day in the car. "Do you feel its pain?" The little sprite said when the tree was being chopped.... That was my only memory of Fern Gully.

Whoopi does voiceovers promoting Sesame Street stuff all over the world. I totally buy into it. I find her voice strangely authoritative on a number of subjects. Hello? The View?
And Avatar reminded me of Ferngully which I too have never seen because of our stances against it and Waldenbooks and Kmart in the early 90's.

I mean, really?! Who doesn't love Sister Act 2?

Also Nina, please don't leave out the Liz Claiborne boycott - I mean, she is a satan worshipper.

Glad to get a shout. I'm still amazed that people talk smack on whoopi. Did she or did she not have the guts to name herself whoopi. Yes. She did. And if you remember her hair at the end of Sister Act, when she is, how you say "out of the habit"...well, that hair would turn heads any day of the week...not to mention the circle-frame sunglasses. Oh yes. She's an icon.
